Strijp R - historical memory and innovative housing design

Introduction
By the end of the 20th century, buildings of the industrial age had lost their productive function, thus falling into total disuse. These so called "contemporary ruins" or abandoned industrial areas strengthen our belief in perceived decadence. This kind of negative feeling is worth exploding in all cultures. Abandoned areas record memories and recall memories. They demand that we remember where we are, how we got there, what our values are. Should they ever stop demanding, they would be doomed to "death". Are we sensitive enough to listen to them?

Transforming industrial areas means to re-introduce them into a circle of life through, at first, the positive reading of the concepts of obsolescence and dereliction; then, it implies a work against amnesia of the distinctive qualities existing on the site. In fact, these elements form the raw material for the design and leave wide room for invetiveness, manipulation and creativity.

Project
The project design will concern a proposal for an innovative housing area in Strijp R, the former industrial site by Philips Electronics in Eindhoven, where they invented and producted the television set in the 40's and 50's, one of the most known consumer's good.
According to the new plans for the site, the majority of buildings will be demolished in order to make available space for a residential area. Refusing the "tabula rasa" approach, the design studio will begin with a search for those in-built forces, patterns, materials that are embedded in the site. How to recognise these characterisics and diffrences? The esisting buildings stimulate our perception and inspire memory. How do designers interpret memory in their proposals of transformation? Does memory always qeual nostalgia? Can perception and memory be driving components of the design process? " Memory " is ment for the personal ability to recall information of past event, ideas and feelings... works freely by evocation, metaphor... can´t be dictated.
To design houses in this area it is not only to respond to a market demand but it is a challenging opportunity to experiment with inventive housing and ways of living.
As a result, all projects will try to prove that inspiration from historical memory and innovation are not in conflict. Their mutual relationship is the ground for the architectural design, especially in a rich and distinct site like Strijp R.

Site
Strijp R is on the western side of the city of Eindhoven and has an extension of 18ha. It has clear boundaries, marked out by a double line of trees. On the north, Strijp R is bordered by the green field of "De Wielewaal"; on the east, by the industrial area of Strijp T; on south and west, by the housing area of the "Drents Dorp". The site is characterised by a diagonal street, originally an old dike that was transformed in the 50's into a railway line and used for the domestic industrial buildings (northern side) related to the production of TVs (glass and ceramic factory, areas for mounting the screens, production testing labs etc...) The architectural language is bades on principles of standadisation and flexibility. It tracks, and different use of bricks. The elevated streets of cables and carriers are still of strong visual impact.

First of all I want to say thank you to everyone who came to my birthday party! Most of all I want to thank Vera, because she prepared everything at home so nice and cosy. I felt like at home although I missed my family and sweetheart Sammy… Thank you Helena for your nice and personal present! Thank you Sadan, we have to meet for a Stamperle Schnaps... .Thank you Gopi, your good is very helpful for our design project at university! And Katja, I love your chocolate! Many greetings home to my room mate in Graz, Petra! I like all the nice verses of the new calendar! Thank you my girls, Regina, Jeli and Alex for the nice birthday wishes, I got per post! Big kisses and hugs home to my parents and for the great laptop I got a while before my birthday, because it was very urgent. And thank you to your parents Sammy, your mum had a great idea with the towels for sauna! It was a very big and personal surprise!!! Most of all thank you for your love and that you´ re always with me, where ever I go and what ever I do! … I never miss my bedtime story about the pea nuts!!!

I am very proud of myself, because I made the Sachertorte the first time, with great support from my mum at home and it really tasted lekker! Mum thank you for the recipe and that you were the whole weekend on phone available, during I was baking the flan!

Während es draußen schön langsam beginnt, so vor sich hin zu herbstelt, sind wir Erasmusstudenten schon wieder fleißig am arbeit. Für morphology und stereotonic werden nun größere Kunstobjekte aus Parafin und Holz entworfen, welche dann zum Abschluss in der großen Aula ausgestellt werden.

Am Dienstag den 25ten wurden Helena und ich von Gopi zu einem indischen dinner eingeladen! Es schmeckte vorzüglich und ich muss hinzufügen, dass ich es von Gopi sehr aufmerksam finde, dass er sein Gericht nicht zu scharf würzte, obwohl Helena und ich schon etwas mehr vertragen hätten….

Mittwochs sind dann Carola, Helena und ich zum „Wir sind Helden“ – Konzert ins Fan Effenaar ausgeflogen. Irgendwie hatte ich mir von der Konzerthalle im MVRDV- Bau mehr erwartet… sie ist eben eine große Konzerthalle, wie man sie überall antrifft und die Akustik war auch nicht wirklich so berauschend. Die Darbietung war dafür umso besser, etwas Abwechslung für zwischendurch! Die Vorgruppe Polarkreis 18 konnte mich jedoch nicht so sehr mitreisen, ich brauch da wohl mehr Beat, als nur so Rockgegröle…

Samstags war nach unserer kleinen Geburtstagsfeier mit Sadan und der Grundlagenschulung in Dream Weaver 8 wieder Erasmusparty angesagt. Wie immer trafen wir uns ab 23:30 zum gemütlichen Plausch in der spanischen Garage….

1st weekly summary

So schnell kann hier eine Woche vergehen…

Am Dienstag hat sich meine Vorahnung, dass hier Fußgänger einfach keine Rechte haben wahrlich bewiesen… abgesehen davon, dass Helena und ich im niederländischen Durchschnitt sehr kurz sind und generell fast immer beim Überqueren eines Radfahrweges beinahe überfahren werden, konnte ich mich am Dienstag mit den Inlineskates noch mal aus der Zwickmühle rollen. Vorausschauend wie man da so unterwegs ist, will ich rechts ran fahren, damit mich der von hinten kommende Radfahrer links überholen kann, aber was macht der Bursche, er klingelt nicht und will rechts vorfahren und da war sein Vorderrad schon zwischen meinen Beinen… nur gut, dass ich auf Skates unterwegs war und dann eben mitgerollt bin… Er hatte dann im Endeffekt einen größeren Schock als ich… klein Karinle ist dann eben weitergerollt, als wäre nichts geschehen und er hat sich verdutzt vielmals entschuldigt… sehr brav… Na egal auf jeden Fall wird’s wirklich Zeit für ein Radl hier.

Der morphology and stereometrik Kurs dienstags gefällt mir hier wahnsinnig gut! Wir sind da momentan brav am Experimentieren mit dem Holz und Parafin, siehe Fotoalbum.

International Design studio kommt jetzt auch richtig ins Rollen! Am Donnerstag haben Helena und ich gleich mal eine ungewollte Bustour in ein neues Viertel von Eindhoven unternommen, da wir eigentlich davon ausgegangen sind, dass es nur eine Linie 3 gibt, mit der wir zu unserem Planungsgebiet gelangen und nicht auch noch eine 2te Linie 3 die irgendwohin ins Nirgendwo führt *gg*. Na ja, wir nahmen´ s mit Humor und kamen dann leider mit etwas Verspätung zu unserem Vortrag, was aber kein Problem zu sein schien. Es wurden nun endlich die 3er Gruppen für den Entwurf gebildet. Ich hab das Vergnügen mit Helena und Mohamed aus Westafrika aber mittlerweile Niederländer zusammen zu arbeiten - Kommunikationsbasis Englisch.

Meine erster Taekwondo Kurs am Donnerstag war wahrhaftig eine Bereicherung! Ich bin da so richtig auf den Geschmack gekommen und hatte auch gleich eine wahnsinnig liebe Sparringpartnerin Haster, ich hoffe man schreibt sie so…

Ich arbeite nun auch schon mit meinem super tollen neuen Laptop, der mit viel Zeitaufwand und Mühe von Graz über Kärnten zu mir nach Holland gebracht wurde. Im Endeffekt waren jetzt 4 Personen mit der Problemlösung beauftragt. Sammy, großteils Sanjin, mein Papa und Vera! Noch mal ein großes Danke an euch alle!!!

Ja und Fragen bezüglich Regenwetter hier in Eindhoven kann ich nur mit größtenteils Sonnenschein und ab und zu starker Bewölkung und hohen Windgeschwindigkeiten beantworten… wir hatten bisher erst 2-mal kurze Regenschauer, die mich nicht wirklich betrafen. Hoffentlich bleibt es hier noch länger so trocken!

International Design von 08:45-18:00

Heute hatten wir den ganzen Tag Workshop und ich muss sagen es war wirklich lässig!!! Hatten eine Einführung ins bewusstere Fotografieren und danach das Planungsgebiet aufgesucht, um es kurz aber intensiv auf uns einwirken zu lassen und mit ein paar Fotos festzuhalten.

Am Nachmittag sollte dann jeder das Foto mit der größten Aussagekraft für das Gelände auswählen, bearbeiten wenn man mag und es betiteln…. Mein Schleppi hat da aber leider schlapp gemacht… also hab ich eben nur das Foto gewählt, da auf den Uni- Rechnern kein Photoshop installiert ist… laut Betreuer war das aber kein Problem… Gott sei Dank. Nun hab ich ja den lieben Sanjin, Sammys Bruder, meinen Retter in der Not!!! Er ist soooo lieb und kauft mir einen neuen Laptop daheim, um ihn aufzusetzen und der Vera, welche die kommende Woche am Wörthersee Urlaub macht, mitzugeben. Großes Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanke an den Sanjin!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bummeln in der City

Citywalk East 31.08.2007

Bei unserem heutigen Citywalk kamen wir am de Effenaar Gebäude von MVRDV, de Laak House, der Peterskerk und dem Dynamo Gebäude vorbei. Während unseres Rundgangs mussten wir feststellen, dass wir fast alles schon mal gesehen hatten und uns nur die background Info fehlte.
